Eritrean folklore & musical troupe

Here are four front covers from the tapes serie Eritrean folklore & musical troupe, I do not publish the music, maybe I'll do it later. For the moment I'd like to share just the visual side of it. Actually the first one is from the Pioneers serie, I'm not able to find further info, but I guess they all come from live recordings of the same manifestation, the wallpaper on the background testifies this presumption.

Pelle nera, Maschere bianche 2

Next Wire issue contains a very good reportage by Nick Richardson on Congotronics, as a new compilation - the fourth - is due to be released on Crammed Disc. Photographies of the article are by Pieter Hugo, the same of that serie on Lagos' hyenas featured on the cover of Lagos Shake - A Tony Allen Chop Up, released last year by Honest Jon's.
Hugo's last publication is on Nollywood, the nigerian film industry. All portraits plus one self-portrait of Hugo himself…
"the Madonna reimaged as the ghost of the Emperor Haile Selassie meets Idi Amin, Charlie’s Angels do Rambo — Foxy Brown-style, David Lynch’s Lost Highway snakes through Lagos, Ghostface Killa mutates into Fela’s “Zombie” and Dracula gives way for Blacula. Voodoo, hoodoo and mambo are mashed up with Igbo rituals. Ahhwooooo… Werewolves of Lagos."
Words by Stacy Hardy, essay published in Nollywood.

Pelle nera, Maschere bianche
